NUTRITION - DIET & SUPPLEMENTATION

It seems a bit cliche but I'll say it anyway, your diet should be good enough to be able to supply your full nutritional needs! There may be some credence to this statement if we lived on our own organic farm, organically fertilised the soil in which we grew all our own vegetables and fruit, ate all organically grown non GMO nuts, seeds and grains along with the fully certified meats, eggs and dairy products (where tolerated) and of course drank only spring/steam distilled water.

The other criteria would be that the rest of our diet and lifestyle needs to be chemical and stress free! So, no environmental pollutants on any level - physical, emotional, or spiritual. Now, it would seem that I have painted a pretty grim picture of the UNATTAINABLE perfect diet, but in fact it's not that difficult to keep a "clean as possible diet". The biggest groups of food to avoid are those with additive numbers in and anything that's been fried or sweetened.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTATION

This is of course a major argument for supplementing the diet with concentrated superfoods and/or vitamin and mineral products. The use of these supplemental products act in two ways. 1) Work as a nutritional insurance policy to fill the dietary gaps created by a suboptimal diet, 2) Increase the levels of raw materials needed to drive our protective antioxidant systems, which are placed under enormous pressures, due to the amount of pollutants and chemicals in the typical 21st century living environment.

WHAT SUPPLEMENTS DO I USE?

That's where I'd like to think I come into the equation, being the person who is qualified to give advice on specific individual health problems. But just as in Herbal Medicine, there are two types of nutritional prescriptions. 1) Preventitive nutritional supplementation and 2) Treatment for specific short term problems.

Prevention

Generally involves using nutritional antioxidants to fortify the immune system in an attempt to slow the inevitable aging process. Examples of these are: Vitamins A, C, E Beta Carotene, B6, B12 and Folic Acid; Minerals - Zinc, Selenium, Magnesium, Germanium; Nutrients - Lipoic Acid, N-Acetyl Cysteine, Glutathione and Co-Enzyme Q10. All of the above nutritional compounds are, in one form or another, used in one or more of the enzyme systems that dynamically protect our cells from prematurely breaking down. This breakdown is initiated by exposure to both environmental chemicals and the inate metabolic chemicals we produce within our bodies every second of the day. Preventative treatment involves longer term moderate doses.

Acute Treatment
Of course, has to be tailored to the needs of the given situation. In contrast to the dosing in preventative therapy, treatment in the acute situation is for a specific short duration and generally at a much higher dosage. For example, the use of Vit C as a preventative therapy is from 1gr - 3gr/day, but as an acute treatment the dosage range jumps to 6gr - 12gr/day, and would be used at that dosage throughout the acute phase of the infection 3 - 14days depending on the infection.

Super Foods As Nutritional Therapy
These extraordinary, nature derived, nutritionally dense foods are a great way to fortify a 'not so perfect' diet or even to 'naturally' top up an already good diet. Their major constituents are the highly valued Green Foods - Spirulina, Chlorella, Barley &/or Wheatgrass Powder, Kelp and Alfalfa. Depending on the product, they will also have concentrated vegetable and fruit extracts, pollen, royal jelly, molasses and often a variation of herbal tonics.

The Importance Of  ALKALINITY
The most significant benefit of supplementing with the Green Foods is their highly alkaline nature. This is due to their abundant levels of chlorophyll, minerals and trace elements. The Naturopathic blueprint for optimum health,  evolves around striving to maintain a system that is fuelled by a diet 80% alkaline. What's alkaline you say? Well, the vast majority of vegetables and fruit, millet and almonds are specifically alkaline, meaning everything else is acid. This is why beng able to use a concentrated alkaline food to help us achieve some level of alkalinity is invaluable. All levels of disease are invariably supported by increased levels of tissue acidity which in turn means less oxygenation of the tissue is occurring - a bad  scenario if you are wanting more energy. We need to THINK ALKALINE if we are to move toward optimum health.

I've endeavoured to touch on some important general nutritional health topics here and I look forward to being able to coach you forward into abundant health
